I wanted to comment on the way prodigi picks problems
    for students.

There is an online chess tactics website
chess.emerald.net where chess problems are selected
to students based on rating of a problem and rating of
a student. Ratings of both problems and students are
dynamically adjusted. There is a description of how that
    system works at http://chess.emrald.net/ratinginfo.php

From my personal expirience that rating system works very well.

I think compared to it the rating system prodigi uses
is less flexible and makes learning experience less rewarding. The part that works against prodigi is that
when student reaches “expert” level he will be offered only expert level problems until he is knocked down to
a lower level. I noticed that this leads to unnecessary negative emotions in students.

In a similar sityation the system I mentioned
above would instead offer a mix of problems with different ratings “centered” around “expert” level.
So a student who is not quite at an “expert” level
will still be offered problems that he can easily solve
together with more difficult problems. I noticed that this makes the experience more positive.

    that was just a comment.

mangahigh is very nice! keep up good work!

    Dear Alex,

Thank you for this thoughtful and good post. This is an interesting concept, but it is a radical step away from our current system! It is difficult to imagine how we would incorporate this in the near term given the medals system that we have.

We are making some big improvements to Prodigi currently that will make it a little easier for students to make progress through the difficulty levels, and also more inviting for students to ask for Hints & Solutions. We will also incorporate more instruction material within Prodigi. We hope this will make Prodigi better for your students,

    Regards,

    Toby Rowland
